Steven Lawenda, M.D.
Steven Lawenda, M.D. is a board-certified Family Medicine physician in Southern California Kaiser Permanente. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry with honors from U.C. Berkeley and his M.D. from UC Davis School of Medicine where he was awarded honors in Family Medicine. He then completed his residency at Brown University/Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island where he was awarded Family Medicine Resident Teacher of the Year.
With regrettably little education in nutrition, Dr. Lawenda personally struggled with obesity and some of the very same chronic conditions affecting his patients. Worried about his own health and disappointed that he wasn’t a good example for his patients, Dr. Lawenda fortunately discovered the power of plant-based nutrition. Adopting a plant-based diet, Dr. Lawenda successfully transformed his own health and subsequently has inspired many of his patients and colleagues to do the same.
Recognizing the limitations of traditional office visits, Dr. Lawenda co-created a program called “Life 180” to guide and support patients in making the transition to a plant-based diet. Patients in “Life 180” have successfully reversed many of their chronic medical conditions, reducing their need for diabetes and high blood pressure medication by over 80%, all while improving their quality of life.
Acknowledging the powerful impact healthcare professionals can make when they lead by example, Dr. Lawenda also co-led a 21 day plant-based diet challenge for nurses and physicians at his medical center. Ultimately many of his colleagues were inspired to improve their own diets and now are encouraging their patients to do the same. For his inspiration and leadership, Dr. Lawenda was honored by his medical group as an “Everyday Hero.”
